A two-hour delay only serves to build up expectations and anticipation; and finally, Gazini Cristiana Ganados, from Talisay, Cebu City, has just been crowned as Miss Universe Philippines 2019.
At 23 years old, Ganados is obviously familiar with the camera and with beauty pageants in general, as she also bagged two other awards, Binibining Photogenic and Binibining Best in Long Gown, on the same evening. But one does not become a beauty queen overnight. Previously, according to the Cebu Daily News, Ganados had been crowned Miss Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation, Inc 2016; she was First Runner-Up in Miss Bohol 2017, and she was also a contender in Miss World Philippines in 2014. Her victory as Miss Universe Philippines was only a result of a steady rise to the top.
Though Ganados lists herself as a model in Models Origin Management, her ultimate advocacy is to fight for women’s rights, with a particular emphasis on the care of the elderly, “for us to be able to know that someone is loving us and someone is pushing us to whatever ambitions that we have. We will be able to rise from our decisions, to whatever dreams that we have, goals that we have and we will achieve it because of those values, those wisdoms that they gave us.” In this way, Ganados is all about honoring the legacy left by women, young and old alike. Women are expected to be agents of love and care in the world, but where do they learn to love in the first place? Who sustains them in their fight for justice and equality? Ganados points to those who have nurtured and cared for us from the very beginning: our mothers & grandmothers.

Sure enough, Ganados’ advocacy can be traced to the fact that she was raised by her grandparents. Though her Palestinian-Filipina mix gives her striking looks, our Miss Universe Philippines 2019 is driven by a big heart and a strong, calm and collected attitude: she discouraged her supporters from bashing the other candidates, and as a rule maintains that “if you do not have anything good to say, then do not say anything”. Such values have helped her rise to the top, and will surely guide her through the immense pressure of being Miss Universe 2018 Catriona Gray’s successor. In any case, her devotion to “Puglife” makes her all the more endearing to young viewers and animal lovers alike.
