Lt. Gen. Roberto T. Ancan, commander of the Armed Forces of the Philippines’ (AFP) Central Command in the Visayas, on Thursday awarded the gold cross medals to four soldiers of the 11th Infantry “Lapu-Lapu” Battalion in Barangay Salag, Siaton, Negros Oriental for fulfilling their duties to protect and keep the peace.

The four enlisted soldiers who received the medals for their “gallantry in accomplishing the unit’s mission of protecting the Negrenses and bringing peace and development in its area of operation” were Corporals Dennis B. Enalao, Raymundo E. Tanilon, and Richard A. Rafols, and Private 1st Class Ramer D. Maceda.

The gold cross is said to be the fourth highest military award of the Philippine Army.

A media release from the Philippine Army said Ancan also led the wreath-laying ceremony for “fallen comrades” in a ceremony held at the battalion’s headquarters in Barangay Salag.

The Central Command also presented a Plaque of Kapayapaan to the 11th IB and the 302nd Infantry Brigade for the successful dismantling of the Southeast Front of the Komiteng Rehiyon Negros Cebu Bohol Siquijor.

Ancan bestowed the Central Command streamer on the 11th IB for “exemplary performance that significantly contributed to the attainment of the mission of the Central Command.”

Retired soldiers were also recognized for their contributions to the unit’s success.

Ancan is a former member of the 11th IB, serving in different positions between 1989 and 1991.

“This battalion is where I started my military service. Thus, I feel privileged to go back and reminisce the years of service fighting for humanity,” he said.

Thankful for his stint in the battalion, Ancan said, “I take pride in the unit in all its accomplishments, for it showcases how to be a true Lapu-Lapu warrior.” (PNA)
