Infrastructure damage from last week’s strong earthquake in Mindanao has so far reached PHP86 million, the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) reported.

According to the report of DPWH in Region 12, some infrastructures were partially damaged and are continuously being monitored due to the occurrence of aftershocks

All major roads and bridges in the region, however, remain passable, it added.

Upon inspection, cracks were noted on the bridge bank protection of Olandang Bridges 2 and 3 along the Midsayap-Makar Road; the bridge abutment of Malupog and Malitubog Bridges along Banisilan-Guiling Road; and the bridge bank protection of Arizona and Upper Panicupan Bridge along Dualing-New Panay Road, and the Dualing-Baliki Silik Road in North Cotabato.

Other affected bridges include Buayan Bridge along Digos-Makar Road in Sarangani and the Upper Silway Bridge along Albert Morrow Boulevard in South Cotabato.

Maintenance crew immediately installed barricade and warning signs near the reported road slip along Marbel-Makar and Makar Kiamba roads in South Cotabato, and in the Maitum-Lake Sebu road in Sarangani.

The DPWH also reported that the Hall of Justice in Sadaan, Cotabato was severely damaged and needs full rehabilitation.

On the other hand, DPWH has observed minor cracks on the walls of Aleosan District Hospital in Dualing, Cotabato.

Several school buildings that have been damaged in the region were the Dilangalen National High School, Southern Christian College, and Notre Dame of Midsayap College in North Cotabato; and the New Isabela Elementary School, San Emmanuel National High School, and President Quirino National High School in Sultan Kudarat.

DPWH Secretary Mark Villar earlier directed district offices to issue updates on infrastructure damage within their jurisdiction and conduct assessment on major roads and bridges, as well as public schools and buildings.

“We are encouraging each and everyone to contact our office to report vulnerabilities and request rescue operations. Together, let us address the outcomes of the tremor that jolted Mindanao,” he said in a statement.

A 6.3 magnitude earthquake hit the southern part of the country last October 16 that killed seven people and left more than 60 injured. (PNA)
