Opposition Senator Leila M. de Lima has filed a Senate resolution commending gymnast Carlos Edriel Yulo and boxer Nesthy Petecio for bringing pride and glory to the country with their respective gold medals in different world sports events.

In filing Senate Resolution (SR) No. 167, De Lima said the achievements of Filipino athletes, notably Yulo and Petecio, in their respective field of sports could also inspire excellence among other local athletes and encourage youth to engage more in sports.

“The outstanding performance by our Filipino athletes deserve to be commended for the honor that they brought to our country and in recognition of their efforts and sacrifice,” she added.

“There is need to honor exemplary performances from our athletes to encourage our youth to take up sports and compete for our country,” she added.

Last Oct. 12, Yulo bagged the gold medal in the 49th FIG Artistic Gymnastics World Championships held in Stuttgart, Germany when he topped in the floor exercise competition.

Despite being the youngest competitor, 19-year-old Yulo bested Israel’s Artem Dolgopyat and China’s Xiao Ruoteng who took home the silver and bronze medals, respectively.

“Surpassing his bronze medal performance last year, Yulo is also the first Filipino to win a gold medal in the said competition,” De Lima recalled.

A day after Yulo’s feat, Petecio bagged another gold medal for the country, in the 2019 AIBA Women’s World Boxing Championships featherweight division held in Ulan-Ude, Russia.

The lady Senator from Bicol noted that the 27-year old veteran boxer ended the country’s seven-year drought in the tournament since Josie Gabuco took home a gold medal in the light flyweight division in 2012.
