The Bases Conversion and Development Authority (BCDA) said it is conducting a study for a proposed waste-to-energy facility in Tarlac as part of initiatives to adopt this technology in its properties in Central Luzon in coordination with the PPP Center and the Ministry of the Environment Japan.

The BCDA said in a statement Wednesday that adopting this kind of technology offers a solution to the twin problem of surging global waste generation and growing energy crisis.

The study involves site selection, technical, environmental, social, legal, financial, and economic analysis for the design, construction, operation, and maintenance of the facility.

The BCDA will bid the waste-to-energy project once the study is completed.

The BCDA also identified that waste-to-energy projects are sustainable alternative to landfills and as renewable energy source.

It is also aligned with the Marcos administration’s efforts to strengthen solid waste management in the country and complements the government’s Kalinisan sa Bagong Pilipinas Program, promoting for investment in programs, projects, and activities on solid waste management and ecological practices.

“The BCDA is committed to adopting smart and green innovations to push for the sustainable development of our properties. Utilizing waste-to-energy technology, in particular, will modernize solid waste management and promote green energy, helping usher Clark’s transition towards a circular economy,” BCDA President and Chief Executive Officer Joshua Bingcang said.

The World Bank expects annual waste generation globally to climb to 3.4 billion tons by 2050.

Open dumps and landfills without gas collection systems are also projected to bring carbon dioxide-equivalent emissions to 2.6 billion tons in 2050. (PNA)
