Due to the lack of income during this pandemic, Filipinos have resorted to different methods to keep their lifestyles afloat. Many contactless ways to earn arose in these trying times and of course, the most famous one that comes to mind when talking about this is online selling.

However, along with the rise of e-commerce, is the issuance of the Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR) memorandum requiring online entrepreneurs to pay taxes for their business.

Many Filipinos raised their disagreement on this matter, mainly arguing the untimeliness of the order. This includes even non-sellers and Cavite Governor Jonvic Remulla, who voiced out his sentiments via Facebook.

“There is no reason not to support those who are crafty, resourceful, street smart, and adaptive to the modern world. Please, let us not burden them,” he suggested.

“Now is the time to prove our campaign promises,” the official wrote.

Remulla added that his appeal is for the benefit of small online businesses because at times like this they, are barely making a profit. He believes that the government itself should be the one providing comfort to its citizens, rather than giving them “burden”.

“Let us give our small scale business owners a break from the burden of taxes at this very difficult time and fix the issues of corruption first,” Remulla ended.
