As the year 2020 ended, Negros Oriental recorded more recoveries from the coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19).

Assistant Provincial Health Officer Dr. Liland Estacion, health committee chair of the province’s Inter-Agency Task Force for the Management of Emerging Infectious Diseases (IATF-EID), in a virtual presser Thursday afternoon, said were 19 latest recoveries in the province.

As of Dec. 31, the total number of Covid-19 cases in Negros Oriental was pegged at 937, broken down into 763 recoveries, 146 active infections, and 28 deaths.

Estacion also reported in her yearend press briefing that Negros Oriental has 29 new confirmed Covid-19 cases, which included a doctor, government employees, two students, a businessman, and a firefighter.

The 29 new cases are from Dumaguete (16); Siaton (three); Sibulan, Amlan, and Valencia (two each); Tanjay City, Dauin, and Manjuyod (one each); and one from Dipolog City but living in Barangay Looc here.

Dumaguete City, the provincial capital, continues to have the highest number of active positive infections, now at 79, as per records of the Provincial Health Office-Provincial Epidemiological Surveillance Unit (PHO-PESU).

Estacion said the continuous spike in cases here was expected due to the celebrations of Christmas and New Year, as she reminded the people to refrain from unnecessary large crowd gatherings, observing health protocols such as wearing a face mask and physical distancing. (PNA)
