President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. on Wednesday expressed optimism that the Philippines’ strengthened ties with Indonesia would continue even after Indonesian President Joko Widodo’s term ends in October 2024.

In his remarks during the state banquet he hosted for Widodo at Malacañan Palace in Manila, Marcos said the two nations have fostered a “true relationship built on seven and a half decades of trust, mutual understanding, and extensive engagement throughout the years.”

“The Philippines and Indonesia are not only neighbors, but sisters and brothers in sharing a longstanding history, culture and common aspirations of peace and prosperity for our people and our future,” Marcos told Widodo.

“As you conclude your term as president of the Republic of Indonesia in these coming months, I am optimistic that your successor will keep the momentum of positive trajectory in both our bilateral and regional partnership,” he added.

Marcos said he would also continue to seek Widodo’s help even beyond the latter’s term.

This, as he acknowledged the good relationship between the Philippines and Indonesia under the leadership of Widodo.

“Even after his time as president, I will still be knocking at his door to ask for assistance whenever I feel the need,” Marcos said. “I assure you sir, that the Philippines will remain committed to working closely and actively with Indonesia as we nurture our bonds and kinships.”

During his bilateral meeting with Widodo, Marcos lauded the Indonesian president’s visionary leadership and strong commitment to promoting and enhancing the long-standing and close ties between the Philippines and Indonesia.

Widodo arrived in Manila on Tuesday for a three-day official visit aimed at strengthening Indonesia’s relations with the Philippines.

A memorandum of understanding on energy cooperation between the Philippine and Indonesian governments was also signed on the sideline of the bilateral meeting between Marcos and Widodo. (PNA)
