The Department of Energy (DOE) and the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) are partnering for research and development (R&D) in the renewables sector using the Renewable Energy Trust Fund (RETF).

This, as DOE Secretary Raphael Lotilla and DOST Secretary Renato Solidum Jr. led the signing of a memorandum of agreement (MOA) in Taguig City on Wednesday.

Section 28 of the Renewable Energy Act of 2008 mandated the establishment of an RETF to enhance the development and greater utilization of RE.

Under the MOA, the two agencies will collaborate on research projects concerning RE through the Philippine Council for Industry, Energy and Emerging Technology Research and Development (PCIEERD).

Both agencies agreed to focus future research and studies on enhancing the efficiency, affordability and scalability of RE technologies, including solar, wind, hydro, biomass, ocean, geothermal energy and other emerging technologies.

The MOA is also eyed to facilitate the application of the R&D findings and innovations to promote the adoption and commercialization of RE technologies and growing the local green economy.

“By joining forces with the DOST, we aim to leverage our collective strengths and resources to drive innovation and overcome technical, economic, and policy challenges to facilitate the widespread adoption of RE technologies,” Lotilla said.

He added R&D in the renewables sector will provide policymakers with scientific and technical insights in analyzing policy frameworks and craft mechanisms to support RE deployment across the country.

This initiative also aims to help the country in achieving its RE goals of a 35-percent share to the energy mix by 2030 and 50 percent by 2040. (PNA)
