You may have heard the phrasing “An apple a day, keeps the doctor away” from your parents, grandparents, teachers, or classmates from when you were young, but have you ever wondered if it is true?

You may also be thinking why apples? Why apples, when most of the time the vegetables your parents have forced you to eat, are green and sometimes gross looking. While apples are not gross as looking and they taste sweet, unlike the bitter leafy greens, the fruit may have been applied in the phrase due to the several benefits it gives as well as how easy it is on the eyes and mouth.

Apples contain Vitamin C. This vitamin is regarded for helping your immune system to possibly prevent illnesses like fever or colds.

Apples are low in calories. Red apples are sweet and can swerve sugar cravings whilst also remaining low in calories. A medium apple contains roughly 95 calories, while a candy bar can easily contain over 150 calories, thus making apples a healthier option.

Apples contain phenols. Phenols have beneficial effects on cholesterol, it decreases bad cholesterol whilst increasing good cholesterol.

Apples can prevent tooth decay. When biting into an apple, the juice that comes with it has properties that can prevent bacteria, thus possibly preventing tooth decay.

Apples contain phytonutrients. Phytonutrients can prevent neurodegenerative diseases like Alzheimer’s.

Apples contain flavonoids. Flavonoids are an antioxidant that can also prevent heart diseases like coronary heart disease and cardiovascular disease.

Amid all these benefits, there is no concrete evidence that eating an apple every day will prevent a visit to the doctor. Nonetheless, it is still a great addition to one’s diet and don’t pose much harm to one’s health when eaten in moderation.

So, why not continue having an apple a day? It’s delicious, beneficial and can be eaten anytime, anywhere.
